A Splash of Independence Embracing My New Kitchen Splashback

As an older woman living alone, I often encounter well-meaning people who assume that age limits what I can do—their concerns, while kind, sometimes feel like a constraint on my independence. However, my recent adventure in home improvement has given me a fresh sense of accomplishment and pride. I’ve just installed a beautiful new kitchen splashback and did it all by myself.

For years, my kitchen was a cosy but dated space. The tiles, once fashionable, had long since lost their charm. I wanted to refresh the look of my kitchen, but the thought of hiring someone for such a small job seemed unnecessary. Then, I discovered glass splashbacks. Not only are they stylish and modern, but they’re also designed to be easy to install. The idea of a quick, simple transformation was irresistible.

The splashback I chose is a stunning, high-gloss piece with a pattern that reminds me of a tranquil seaside. It’s incredible how a single item can brighten up an entire room! When it arrived, I was a little nervous. The box was more significant than I expected, and I momentarily doubted my ability to handle it. But the excitement of a new project pushed me forward.

First, I watched a few instructional videos online. Seeing people of all ages and abilities installing splashbacks with ease reassured me. I gathered my tools: a measuring tape, a level, adhesive, and a few cloths for cleaning. The preparation took some time, but I enjoyed every minute of it. Carefully cleaning the wall and ensuring it was dry and smooth gave me a sense of purpose.

Measuring the space where the splashback would go was a critical step. I took time to get it right, double-checking my measurements to ensure a perfect fit. Once I was confident, I applied the adhesive to the back of the splashback. I won’t lie; this part made me a bit anxious. I wanted to make a good decision and get it right. But as I pressed the splashback against the wall, it felt like a perfect puzzle piece sliding into place.

Using the level, I made sure it was straight. Stepping back to admire my work, I felt a rush of pride. There it was, gleaming under the kitchen lights, transforming the space instantly. It was more than just a decorative addition; it symbolised my ability to take charge and enhance my home independently.

Every time I walk into my kitchen now, I can’t help but smile. The splashback reflects light beautifully, making the room feel larger and more welcoming. It’s incredible how such a small change can significantly impact. My friends and family have all remarked on how lovely it looks, and they’re even more impressed when I tell them I did it myself.

This experience has been more than just a home improvement project. It’s been a reminder that age doesn’t define my capabilities. As we grow older, it’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking we must rely on others for everything. While there’s nothing wrong with seeking help, it’s empowering to realise what we can achieve independently.

Installing the splashback has reignited my passion for DIY projects. I’m planning my next venture—perhaps a new coat of paint in the living room or reupholstering a worn-out chair. These projects are about improving my home, maintaining my independence, and finding joy in creativity.

To any fellow seniors reading this, I encourage you to embrace your inner handyman or woman. Don’t let age or doubt hold you back. With some research, patience, and willingness to try, you might surprise yourself with what you can accomplish. There’s a unique satisfaction in saying, “I did that,” and seeing the tangible results of your efforts.

My new kitchen splashback isn’t just a beautiful addition to my home; it’s a testament to the power of self-reliance and the joy of personal achievement. Every time I see it, I’m reminded that I am capable, strong, and independent. Here’s to many more big and small projects and the endless possibilities they bring. I can’t wait!
