A TDS meter offers the fastest way to figure out whether the water you are drinking is safe. Put it in a glass, wait 5 seconds, and a number will appear. Whether it is 180, 420, or 900, each figure delivers something important. 

Even though the TDS reading does not give you the whole picture, it is still useful. It is a good way to find out whether you are saving money on the wrong purifier. If the TDS range is too high, you will know whether to move towards a UV+UF or an RO purifier. It matters most where the supply changes; many regions get corporation water some months, borewell or tanker in others. Every source has a different TDS level for water. What TDS in Water Tells You about the Quality 

TDS, or total dissolved solids, is everything dissolved in your water that is not water itself. Generally, calcium, sulphate, sodium, magnesium, and bicarbonate are grouped together as a single total. 

The TDS water quality is a single figure that signifies dozens of substances. However, it never says which ones. Two glasses of water may have the same TDS reading, but they are highly unlikely to share much in common. 

TDS Meter is for Conductivity, not for Contamination 

The TDS meter does not weigh anything. Only a small current passes between two probes. Then it measures how easily the water conducts that current, and converts the result into an estimated solids figure. Dissolved salts have an electrical charge; that’s why more salt means more conductivity and a higher reading. However, anything in the water that does not carry a charge is not visible to the meter.

TDS is mentioned in parts per million or mg/L; many people assume the two are different measures. For drinking water, the two are treated as interchangeable, so 300 ppm and 300 mg/L mean the same thing.

Everything else you have read is interpretation. No rule says 250 is better than 400. No health authority sets an ideal figure.

Most published TDS charts sort water into five bands, from under 50 ppm (“too low”) to above 500 ppm (“treat it”), with 50–150 ppm marked as ideal. These bands are mostly issued by purifier manufacturers rather than by government health standards, and the “ideal” range typically matches what an RO system outputs.

How to Check TDS of Water at Home 

Checking the TDS level takes less than a minute with a digital pen meter.

1. Collect the water in a clean glass; plastic or steel is fine. 

2. Let it reach room temperature. Conductivity rises with temperature, so hot or fridge-cold water reads wrong.

3. Switch the meter on and dip it to the marked line, no deeper.

4. Wait for the reading to settle, usually five to ten seconds, then note it.

5. Repeat at a second tap and after any purifier, so you hold the source figure and the treated figure separately.

The TDS level settles one decision – whether you need a reverse osmosis membrane at all. RO is a common technology that removes dissolved solids, so a high TDS calls for an RO purifier.

Households searching for the best water purifier for 3000 TDS are usually on saline borewell water. At that level, the meter has already told you what it can. The questions that are left — what exactly is dissolved, and what the meter never saw. 

What the TDS of RO Water Should Read after Purification

The TDS of RO water typically ranges from 50 to 150 ppm. It reads a little higher if the unit has a mineral cartridge that adds back calcium and magnesium. If treated water reads close to the source figure, the membrane is spent or bypassed.

That comparison is the single most useful thing a TDS meter does in a home. The meter cannot certify your drinking water, but it will tell you honestly whether your purifier is still working.

Renting or Buying a Water Purifier when the TDS Level is Not Stable 

If supply varies year-round, buying a fixed specification may pose challenges. A flat on corporation water may need only UV until the building shifts to borewell water for three months and the TDS triples.

Ownership and Renting Move Different Directions 

Buying a purifier settles the question permanently on the day you pay. If the water later changes, you are likely to pay more for the mismatch – the resale value of a two-year-old purifier is close to nothing.

Renting keeps the specification adjustable. When a family moves from a low-TDS to a high-TDS area, the requirement changes. RO rental plans include filter replacement and servicing.

A TDS meter is worth owning. It costs very little. It tells you when your source water has changed, and it is the fastest way to confirm a purifier is still doing its job.

What the meter will not do is grade your water. It cannot name what is dissolved. It cannot see bacteria, and it misses the contaminants that do the most harm in the smallest amounts. Treat the reading as one instrument among several. It is useful for choosing between technologies, but it does not work well as a certificate of safety.
