How Do I Stop My Drains From Clogging

Blocked drains cause slow water discharge, resulting in the presence of water in sinks or tubs. Without drain cleaning, obstructions create additional stress within the pipes that may lead to leaks or even pipe bursts. The clogging also affects the functionality of other equipment, such as dishwashers and washing machines. Here are ways to stop drains from clogging:

Use Drain Strainers

Drain strainers come in various forms and designs. Mesh strainers are used in kitchen sinks to filter food particles. Rubber or silicone sink strainers are tough and bendable to suit most drain holes. Flat drain strainers are ideal for shower or bathtub drain cleaning since they can capture hair and soap. A pop-up drain strainer is simple to wash and will catch large items before they clog your drain.

Avoid Pouring Grease Down the Drain

Do not pour bacon grease and other animal fats directly into the sink because they cool and solidify. Vegetable oils used in cooking also accumulate in the plumbing system and cause blockages. When melted, butter and margarine can solidify within the pipes and hold on to the surface. Any remains of gravy and sauces containing fat must be disposed of properly and not flushed down the drain. Shortening, lard, and other related solid fats are likely to solidify within your drains. Greasy items should be discarded in a container and dumped in a trash can.

Clean Your Drains Thoroughly

Organic drain cleaners rely on natural enzymes to dissolve organic substances such as hair and food particles. They are environmentally friendly and do not harm any pipe type, which makes them useful in the long run. Other drain cleaners have chemicals that include sodium hydroxide or sulfuric acid that help to remove clogs. They should be applied with caution since they are abrasive and can harm pipes.

Bacterial drain cleaners use helpful bacteria to digest the organic matter blocking the drain, preventing buildup. They are similar to enzyme-based cleaners but act slower. Pouring liquid soap or dishwashing detergent down the drain with hot water is useful in clearing grease and fat. For routine cleaning, baking soda and vinegar are an effective duo that will bubble and dissolve small obstructions.

Dispose of Food Waste Properly

Food waste disposal should be done through composting to avoid blocking the drains. It prevents organic matter from being washed down the sink. Sweep or wipe food waste and leftover scraps into a compost bin or garbage receptacle rather than washing them down the sink. Do not put stringy or starchy food waste down the sink, as they may clog the system. Such waste includes fibrous foods like celery or potato peels. Coffee grounds also should be thrown in the trash or compost bin. Use hot water after doing the dishes to wash any remaining remnants of food down the drain.

Install Water Softeners

Ion exchange water softeners are common and work with resin beads to do away with calcium and magnesium ions. Reverse osmosis systems eliminate contaminants such as hard water minerals using a thin barrier known as a semi-permeable membrane. They also enhance overall water quality as well as taste. Template-assisted crystallization (TAC) systems transform hard minerals into microcrystals that do not deposit on pipes. TAC plays a role in the prevention of scaling and buildup.

Electromagnetic water softeners employ magnetic field changes on minerals to minimize scaling and clogging. They are easy to install and also do not need frequent maintenance and troubleshooting. Using these water-softening systems will help prevent the buildup of minerals in your pipes and appliances.

Schedule Plumbing Inspections

Plumbers employ cameras to examine the pipes and identify possible issues that may not be easily noticeable. Routine checks make it possible to notice tree roots or other large obstacles that may block the drains. They can also diagnose problems such as pipe corrosion or the misalignment of pipes. These inspections allow you to exercise some preventative measures, such as removing debris or scale deposits.

Hire a Plumber To Perform Drain Cleaning Services

Clogged drains can cause sewage backflow, which can lead to foul smells. They can also cause water stagnation and damage to appliances. Look for a reliable plumber in your area to help you with drain clearing.
