Basketball Offseason Drills

Offseason basketball drills can be tough to find, especially if you’re trying to avoid the ubiquitous jogging, ball handling, and shooting drills that coaches have been doing forever.

So instead of using drills you’ve probably seen before, try out some of these three basketball offseason drills to add serious fire to your game this season.

Whether you want to increase your stamina for more minutes on the court or become an unstoppable offensive force, these basketball offseason drills will help you take your game to the next level this season.

1. The Mikan Drill

This classic drill is one of the best, if not the best shooting drill for basketball as it is one of the best for getting a feel for the ball as it comes off the backboard.

Perform this exercise beneath the basket before your shooting practice. Learn how the ball bounces off the backboard and how it bounces at different angles.

Begin by standing just beneath the basket. Next, step with your left foot and use the backboard to perform a baby hook layup. Catch the rebound, stride to the right, and make the baby hook layup with your left hand on the left side.

Dribbling is not permitted. Repeat this for a few minutes, alternating between the right and left sides. This will help you with your right and left-handed layups and give you a better shot.

2. Finish With Contact

Set up this exercise by positioning a teammate within the key and near the hoop, facing the bench. The other teammates should be situated immediately across from the first, about five or six feet apart.

Following that, they should lift their hands and put them so that their fingers practically touch. They’ll appear to be trying a double high-five.

Begin by taking a low, athletic posture and dribbling one or two times toward your teammates.

When you get between them, you’ll try to make a layup by pulling your body up and powering through their hands while avoiding being knocked out of your own.

This represents two defenders attempting to block your shot. Your aim should be to make five consecutive layups.

3. Hornacek Shooting Drill

This drill is one of the best shooting drills for basketball. When done correctly, it offers high repetitions and excellent conditioning in a short time.

All sets have ten shots, and two sets have that many locations. The shooter begins in the right corner and runs from place to spot, taking a shot from each location. The player attempts ten shots and then takes two foul shots.

The shooter then takes one shot from each spot, starting from the left corner of the same spot. They attempt ten shots, run two sprints, and then take two foul shots. They repeat the process using all the marked spots on the floor.

Doing full-court shooting is one of the best individual shooting drills basketball. You can do this by yourself or with a friend. All you need is a ball and a hoop. Start at one end of the court and shoot the ball from anywhere on the court.

Mix up your shots, including layups, jump shots, and three-pointers. As you make your way down the court, keep track of how many shots you make. The goal is to make as many shots as possible in a row.

Once you’ve missed any, start over from the beginning. This drill will help improve your shooting accuracy, range, and stamina. Remember that good shooting starts before the shot goes up.

In addition, good shooters have great footwork and balance. So, even if you’re not looking to take an outside shot, spend some time working on your footwork and form so that when the time comes, you’ll be ready.

Conclusion:

Hitting the court for some hoops during the offseason can seriously benefit your game. Still, there are specific drills you should do every time you step out onto the hardwood to build up your shooting game as much as possible before the season begins.
